Who knew that going barefoot could be so good for you! There’s been a new discovery that when you do this electrons from the earth pass up through your feet and go throughout your body and act as a natural anti-oxidant. This actually gets rid of free radicals and with so much talk about free radicals these days and the damage they can do this is something everyone should be doing. Earthing or grounding is one of the best ways to flood your body with anti-oxidants and reduce free radicals as the earth has an enormous amount of electrons. This may be one of the simplest ways to improve your health.

There are many health benefits from doing this. As Dr. James Oschman PhD who is an expert in energy medicine from the University of Pittsburgh and other colleagues have shown that grounding improves sleep, reduces pain and stress, normalizes the day-night cortisol rhythm, shift’s the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic activation, speeds up would healing, and thins the blood.
There is a right way and a wrong way to ground yourself. Most of the shoes that we Americans wear everyday have soles made of rubber or plastic which effectively disconnects us from the earth and therefore, we lose the benefits of grounding. But, leather-soled shoes are good conductors of the Earth’s natural electron flow and they allow one to be grounded with the earth. Of course, the best way to ground oneself is to just go barefoot, but you’ll still need to be on a good surface.

Here are the surfaces that will ground you:

  • Sand (beach – especially when walking in the water)
  • Grass (preferably moist)
  • Bare soil
  • Concrete and brick (as long as it’s not painted or sealed)
  • Ceramic tile
  • The following surfaces will NOT ground you:
  • Asphalt
  • Wood
  • Rubber and plastic
  • Vinyl
  • Tar or tarmac

Who says being healthy has to be expensive. My philosophy is to get back to the basics and live as close to the earth and as naturally as you can to start with and then go from there.

For those who don’t have the time to go outside barefooted, there is another option. The website www.earthing.com sells earthing mats. They have a variety to choose from anything from a mat to a half sheet to an earthing throw. There is no excuse for not doing something this simple and inexpensive for your health. So start grounding yourself and begin taking charge of your health now!
